Open Source@lemmy.ml•Journiv v0.1.0-beta.8: This Thanksgiving, give your family the gift of memories that last forever
0·9 days agoI am not sure where this thread is going. I don’t see it adding any value to the discussion or the project. If you have any specific feedback on how to make the project better. I will love to hear that.
I am also not sure how nitpicking on choice of word is helpful here. People can interpret things differently and above is your interpretation.
To provide context on why the post has that sentence:
- The major feature of this release is user management with RBAC.
- You might not have a use case where you use software with other family members but many do specifically in self hosted world where they self host for the family. See:
- https://github.com/journiv/journiv-app/issues/41
- https://github.com/journiv/journiv-app/issues/18
- https://github.com/journiv/journiv-app/issues/62 many more …
- Hence that sentence.
- Like I said you are reading too much into it. Its like a vegan having a problem with a billboard which says “Delicious meat” just because they don’t eat meat.

0·9 days agoThank you. Yes, at some point. It is totally doable but I haven’t had a chance to look into building standalone desktop apps yet. As of now it is possible to run this manually outside of docker: https://journiv.com/docs/installation/manual

0·24 days agoUnderstood about docker. Yes, those are planned and on roadmap. Apps will be coming soon. But software takes effort and time and just to get it here I have put in hundreds of hours and there is much more to build. Currently my focus is to make the project sustainable so I can continue developing it.
Thanks.

0·24 days agoYes definitely. This is a very good feedback. Its surprising how being a developer and self hosted enthusiast who is neck deep on hosting everything of my own I completely forgot that there will be people who will like to use this and not know about docker and all the stuff (very common thing in self hosted community).
I would love to guide you through installing and using the application and your experienced feedback would definitely be very helpful in improving the app.
Are you on discord? Then you can join Journiv’s community discord server https://discord.com/invite/CuEJ8qft46 if you aren’t then just send me a message here.

0·24 days agoNo not rude at all :) All this is a good feedback. If the lack of documentation confused you then I am sure there are many others who will get confused for the same thing. It is definitely something I should improve upon so everyone can understand the project and use it if they want to.
Cross platform for various reasons. There are two parts to Journiv
- Backend: This is what you run on your local machine (ideally a small server/nas) which can run docker. You can run it on any machine.
- Frontend: As of now this is a web app which you can run any where. The frontend of Journiv is in flutter which is cross platform and allow native desktop and mobile apps. Mobile apps will be launched soon.
Can I ask if you have ran/used docker before?
I really can’t believe this is going so far for a sentence in the post…
Like I said above that is your interpretation of the sentence. People can have their own. The sentence does not state a fact which is either true or false.
This is what I was thinking when I wrote that. “give your family the gift of memories that last forever” you don’t even have to give them the instance software to use it. You start using it capturing your memories and thoughts where you have full control and ownership on your data which can last with you for decades rather than according to some third party company terms and policies etc.
At somepoint you can “if you want to” give all/some part of it to your kids/family. What is said above is how Journiv started https://journiv.com/blog/the-story-behind-journiv

Yes because even they can just easily give it away in Apple or Google play family sharing they want you to pay the subscription individually :)
And now I am out of this comment thread. I don’t think I will have the last word here so I will let you go next :)
